MMA (אומנויות לחימה משולבות) is martial sport and is the acronym of the term Mixed Martial Mrts. MMA has become a generic term and exploded in public attention since the 1980's and the rise of the octagon arena. MMA practitioners form a fast developing combat sport that includes techniques from wrestling, striking, kicking and ground fighting disciplines. The Internet and the globalization of both information and UFC competitions contributed to the vast popularity of this, mainly, spectator sport. The MMA dojos, places of learning, are also increasing in number. The number of accredited MMA schools in the New York area is now (2012), up from zero at the beginning of the 80's.

The sport is evolving rapidly with more organizations entering into the syndicated and profitable media events while the technical abilities and the sophistication of the fighters improve.
