Waki Gatame

By Yossi Sheriff

Waki Gatame functions as an arm immobilization lock. Within the Ninjutsu methodology, it stands as one of the most powerful control techniques because it concentrates the practitioner's entire body mass against a single articulation: the elbow joint. This application demands precise, rapid execution—since a physically stronger opponent may successfully resist if implementation isn't quick enough. The technique proves most effective when preceded by a strategic strike, ideally directed at the midsection, causing the opponent to hunch forward and facilitating easier application of the control position.

Description of Waki Gatame

To execute this technique, first neutralize the opponent's grip by applying upward pressure in a dynamic, forceful motion. Next, manipulate the opponent's arm by rotating it until the elbow points skyward, then secure it beneath your shoulder and armpit region. Subsequently, guide both yourself and the opponent groundward, ensuring they land prone with their face directed toward the floor—effectively restricting their mobility. Apply pressure at the elbow junction by positioning your body weight above this point while simultaneously elevating the opponent's wrist. When properly applied, this technique creates sufficient mechanical advantage to compromise the elbow's structural integrity.
