Nuba

By Yossi Sheriff

Nuba is an African martial system of wrestling and weapon fighting originating in the nuba region in Sudan. Both the wrestling and stick fighting are practiced in village competitions. The wrestling rules involve striking but emphasize takedowns, with no pinning on the ground.

Nuba stick fighting is a severe form of competition and since it's done with a minimum of protection major injuries are common. Nuba stick fighting influenced Tahtib (Egyptian stick fighting) and at the begining of the 20th century assisted in developing the Israeli martial system of Kapap.
