Choosing the Right Knife for Home Self-Defense

By Yossi Sheriff

In this video, I delve into one of the topics of family defense and security I usually keep off the web: selecting the right knife for home self-defense. It's important to understand the characteristics that make a knife effective for this purpose and those that don't.

Knife for Self defense at home

Let's start with traditional knives. They may be steeped in history and not too costly, but their practicality for defense can be limited. For example, a knife that requires two hands to open or has a weak structure that could break upon impact is not suitable for self-defense situations.

Some knives may feel substantial in hand, but their construction may not withstand the rigors of self-defense. A knife that breaks easily or has a blade too short to cause a significant wound is not just ineffective; it's a liability.

On the other hand, a knife that is too complex or delicate, perhaps more suited for opening clams than for defense, is also not advisable. The grip, the ease of extraction after a strike, and the blade's depth are all crucial factors to consider.

My personal pocket knife, while convenient and easy to open with one hand, has its drawbacks. The serrations may hinder quick withdrawal from a target, and its small size requires precision and multiple strikes to be effective.

In contrast, a well-designed knife like the C.R.K.T. Hissatsu model, I prefer, has a strong, full-tang blade, a robust back, and no unnecessary frills. Its size ensures that it can reach vital areas with a single thrust, and its slight curve enhances its cutting capability. However, it's important to note that even a well-placed cut doesn't guarantee immediate neutralization unless it's in a critical area.

The absence of a cross-guard is a double-edged sword. While it can be a drawback in certain situations, the excellent rubber grip of the CRKT Hissatsu knife compensates by ensuring it won't slip even when wet.

I stress that carrying a knife outside the home is illegal and can result in felony charges. The knives discussed are strictly for home defense. The right knife can be a crucial tool for protecting your family, a step below having a handgun, but it's essential to understand its use and limitations.

Remember, the goal is not to engage in a fight but to neutralize a threat quickly and effectively, ensuring the safety of yourself and your loved ones.
