Bartitsu
Bartitsu or Baritsu (ברטיטסו) is a western martial art originating in England at 1898. Bartitsu is an eclectic discipline that uses techniques from Judo, Jiu Jitsu, western boxing, Savate and stick fighting. Bartitsu was abandoned as a living, practicable art for most of the 20th century and is now experiencing a revival.
History
Bartitsu was founded by Edward William Barton-Wright, an engineer that spent three years in Japan (1895-1898) under the Japanese modernization initiative. On return to England, Barton-Wright opened a training hall that received some media attention and attracted student. The Japanese martial arts that influenced Bartitsu are Judo and Shinden Fudo Ryu Taijutsu. Bartitsu is featured in the books of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle as the martial art practiced by the famous literary detective Sherlock Holmes.
