Uke, training opponent

By Yossi Sheriff

Uke, 受け, אוקה, יריב אימונים, is the Japanese martial art term for an opponent in kata or a controlled randori situation. The Japanese term for person doing the technique, sometimes called the defender, is Tori.

The role of Uke is not passive only. In Ninjutsu and TSKSR kata, Uke initiates the moves and has an important and active role in the techniques.
