Background

This posture has two main functions:

  1. This posture is intended to lure the opponent into attacking and therefore is used to counter attack during sparring, an ongoing fight and a competition.
  2. This posture, the Kosei no kamae, is used in street situations, before the actual fight begins, to judge distance, form a barrier, and to know how to time the fight.

Description of the Technique

To perform this posture correctly some of the body weight must be on the front leg (in order to counter attack quickly). The front hand is either:

  1. raised at about the eye level of the user and the back hand protects the ribs with a closed fist.
  2. the front hand forms a barrier used to judge distance and timing at the level of the opponent's chest.

When counter attacking the front hand can be used to block effectively and to generally disrupt the opponent's attacks.
