Summary

This is a Judo throw that is classified as a foot throwing technique.

Technique

Dashi Barai belongs to the Ashi-Waza family of throws. It may look an easy throw, but to succeed one must perform Kuzushi (off balancing opponent)and a sweep of the leg in perfect timing and harmony. the throw may be executed while walking in a straight line (classical), in a circulatory movement or from a static position.

The footage shows the classical "in line" Dashi Barai. The Kumi kata is classical Judo grip: Tori's right hand grips Uke's lapel, Tori's left hand grips uke's sleeve. It doesn't really matter who leads, the throw can be performed either ways. After a few steps Tori makes a shorter step and places his right foot (the none sweeping one) preferably, opposite of uke's front leg. then, when the timing is right, i.e. , when uke's swept leg is still on the floor but no weight is rested upon it, tori swings his left leg from left to right and sweeps uke's foot vigorously. the sweep must be as close to the ground as possible, and hit uke's foot lower than the ankle with the tori's sole. Sweaping the leg is not enough. 80 percent of the throw's success lies in the Kuzushi. Simultaneously with the sweep must come an energetic jolt, like tori is steering a great wheel to the left in a big, sharp and round movement. only the sweep and the jolt combined together yield a successful throw.
