Capoeira
From AKBAN-wiki, the Martial Arts Database
Capoeira is a martial system, martial art and combat sport originated in Brazil. Capoeira is characterized by dance like movements and the full integration of the spectators and opponents. This integration is achieved by the use of music, rhythm and lyrics all conveying insights and strategies important to the Capoeirista.
History of the Capoeira
The ancient history is shrouded in myth. It is presumed that the dance like martial art originated in similar dances practiced by African slaves brought to Brazil during the slave trade years.
At the begining of the 20th century capoeira was considered illegal and it's practice was forbidden for years. Only in the 1950 has Capoeira gained enterance into main culture and later on popularized by tourists who spread the, till then, unrecognized martial art.
