Hanbo, half staff

By Yossi Sheriff

Hanbo (הנבו) is a short, heavy stick 90-100 cm long. The Hanbo (literally, half stick) is used in many Japanese Koryu.

For the avarage practitioner, the hanbo was three shaku, or 90 cm long, exactly half the length of the long stick. These days many practitioners deal more easily with a slightly longer weapon. As with any weapon, bearers would often find one best suited to their build, opting often for one that comes up to about waist height.

The Ninjutsu Hanbo set of techniques is unique in that it focuses on techniques that are mainly low level of violence.
