The special 120 session and our 31st year

August 27, 2016
Yossi Sheriff

I started teaching in 1986 and I try to maintain an even training rhythm since then – this year marks the 31st year of teaching. Yep, I just cleared 30 teaching years. To mark the end of the Blitz month and the beginning of our 31st year we will do the “120!” this Tuesday.

The “120!”, for those who did not participate yet, is one of the more robust, but fun, events that we do in AKBAN. We spar exactly 120 bouts, each with a different partner, each exactly one minute long. Please bring your Hakama and Gi as we will done these at the end to symbolise the conclusion of the Blitz month and our return to traditional syllabus.

The “120!” At Honbu dojo Tel Aviv, Tuesday, 30.8.2016, from 18:00 till 20:00

At Wednesday the 31st there will not be a training session in Jerusalem – we’ll return to Tedi dojo in Sunday, September the 4th.

At the end of the week I’ll be in Berlin for a two part seminar (FB link). The first two days will be dedicated to a master class in applying tradition to street levels of violence. The second part of the seminar will be our extremely important, must-not-miss, Detant workshop. This workshop, of which we will do the first phase, teaches and drill emotional regulation in combat through the body. Detant’s knowledge is our Academy’s Okuden and is a pre-requisite for grade tests in AKBAN.

Here’s a link to the seminar’s page on Facebook. We are almost full, to reserve the last two places, please contact The AKBAN Germany headmaster, Ran Levari in FB.

Fourth week of the August Blitz, 21-25.8.2016

It’s the fourth week of this Blitz and I have nothing to add except: “keep going”. It’s good to continue to be careful, like we did so far, and keep pushing forward, so push forward.

The improvement in technical abilities is clear to see and this intensive month will give results for years to come.

It’s tough to practice in August, but, like Hizki says, “Tough is good”.

I am adding five (5) videos to this post that are relevant to our no-gi work. There is always more to learn. Learning is good.

Weekend quote – Carlo M. Cipolla

1st quote

Our daily life is mostly made of cases in which we lose money and/or time and/or energy and/or appetite, cheerfulness and good health because of the improbable action of some preposterous creature who has nothing to gain and indeed gains nothing from causing us embarrassment, difficulties or harm.

Nobody knows, understands or can possibly explain why that preposterous creature does what he does. In fact there is no explanation — or better, there is only one explanation: the person in question is stupid.

Third week of the 2016 Blitz, 14-19.8.2016

Last week was tough with hot days and long sparring sessions. Alongside this activity we started testing for belts below Shodan. Many of the tests were very good and this made me happy.

Twelve participants successfully passed the first phase of another emotional regulation Detant workshop last Friday.

This week, the third week of the 2016 Blitz, we will continue to do Randori over most of the time. These bouts will be videoed and debriefed.

In such a long and rough month it is imperative that we maintain a awareness and professionalism so can get in one piece to the last session of the training year – the 120!

2nd Blitz week and DETANT seminar, 7-12.8.2016

This Friday, 12.8.2016, 10:00-12:00 we will have another DETANT workshop. This workshop is open to trainees who need to pass the 1st phase. Just a reminder, finishing the complete DETANT workshop will be mandatory for all grades above Black belt in AKBAN academy.

The tickets for the DETANT workshop will be online in Tuesday and will be delivered in the WhatsApp groups and in Facebook. As usual, the number of tickets available is limited and registration closes in minutes. Not to worry, till January 2017 we will initiate two thirds of the Israeli, German and Greek veterans.

In the dojo, we are continuing the Blitz month with non-stop randori – this week we start video debriefing. Every partner gets an excerpt slow-mo video from his randori plus a written debriefing form we all must fill and send. The correspondence will be in WhatsApp. If you still use homing pigeons, we are preparing accordingly.

1st quote

I think he didn’t stop in time. He took the Ninjutsu, which is not the best practice there is, and turned it into something very beautiful. I learned from his teachers, Masaaki Hatsumi and especially Tanemura – what Doron did from this here was, to my opinion, much better then the original, really, on a different, higher level.
