This Friday, 2.1.2015, we will train in the ECR group. You can ask your instructor, the ECR group (Edge Combat Research) is open to all AKBAN dojos.
Last week was dedicated to researching the two basic throws of Kukishinden Ryu. The Friday ECR group even advanced to using these throws in Randori. This week, in all the dojos, we will go further and learn resistance and Henka to these Nage waza concepts.
The Advanced Combat Kata groups will utilize these waza in another Shirabe Moguri kata – Yama Otoshi.
“I have decided to stick with my old backpack” – D.
“Only they who go to soires and legislative balls must have new coats, coats to change as often as the man changes in them. But if my jacket and trousers, my hat and shoes, are fit to worship God in, they will do; will they not? Who ever saw his old clothes — his old coat, actually worn out, resolved into its primitive elements, so that it was not a deed of charity to bestow it on some poor boy, by him perchance to be bestowed on some poorer still, or shall we say richer, who could do with less?
I say, beware of all enterprises that require new clothes, and not rather a new wearer of clothes. If there is not a new man, how can the new clothes be made to fit? If you have any enterprise before you, try it in your old clothes.
All men want, not something to do with, but something to do, or rather something to be. Perhaps we should never procure a new suit, however ragged or dirty the old, until we have so conducted, so enterprised or sailed in some way, that we feel like new men in the old, and that to retain it would be like keeping new wine in old bottles.
Our moulting season, like that of the fowls, must be a crisis in our lives. The loon retires to solitary ponds to spend it. Thus also the snake casts its slough, and the caterpillar its wormy coat, by an internal industry and expansion; for clothes are but our outmost cuticle and mortal coil. Otherwise we shall be found sailing under false colors, and be inevitably cashiered at last by our own opinion, as well as that of mankind.” – H.D.T.
This Friday, 26.12.2014, We will work in the ECR group on integrating Kata into Randori.
At the groups, this week, we will explore Koshi Nage and Harai Goshi of Kukishinden Ryu. We will work with resisting these throws and combining with strikes.
The Combat Kata groups will repeat Gyaku Nage, Tama Nage, Teki Otoshi, Musasabi, Uchi Harai and Heito. We will check parallel insights with Fudo Ryu.
Please pay attention, We’ve added another ECR group and upped the syllabus of the veteran sessions into Combat kata analysis.
After preparations that took us several months we are opening the special “Edge Combat Research”, ECR, at Friday mornings. I will instruct this group, with the assistance of Elad Nagar. Elad will emphasize sessions that are direct derivatives of the methodical pyramid. These sessions are aimed to improve combat abilities and fitness and will integrate Ninjutsu into the Randori level.
Once a month I will teach the ECR groups weapons, emphasizing emotional modulation and complex scenarios.
More improvements: the second session in Tuesdays and Wednesdays changes and will focus on Combat Katas. I will lead this one. These sessions, that integrate obscure Ninjutsu kata into practice are extremely tough and necessitate high level of fitness and concentration abilities that exceed regular sessions. They are open to all students who have a taste for this harshness, and who have been training for more then one semester.
At the regular sessions we will continue with advanced Ukemi and combine Kyusho with Nage waza.

May the sound of this bell penetrate deep into the cosmos
Even in the darkest spots
Living beings are able to hear it clearly
So that all suffering in them cease
Understanding comes to their heart
And they transcend the path of sorrow and death.
The universal Dharma door is already open
The sound of the rising tide is heard clearly
The miracle happens
A beautiful child appears in the heart of a lotus flower
One single drop of this compassionate water
Is enough to bring back the refreshing spring to our mountains and rivers.
Listening to the bell
I feel the afflictions in me begin to dissolve
My mind calm
My body relax
A smile is born on my lips
Following the sound of the bell
My breathe brings me back to the safe island of mindfulness
In the garden of my heart
The flowers of peace bloom beautifully.
For this, I think, is the grand illusion of enlightenment, of secular modernity, that the past can be erased, “we will destroy the foundation of the old world*”, and we will then open a new page, clean, rational and enlightened.
Well, this does not work, at least not for most people. And when you look forward to the future we need, first of all, to acknowledge this fact, and then work with it.
