Planned Ninjutsu session, AKBAN Tel Aviv – 1.10.2013

September 30, 2013
Yossi Sheriff

A reminder, we are training at our temporary dojo, 193 Ben Yehuda st. 1st floor.

A controlled level of violence while executing a technique is the domain of masters. The lower the level of violence, the higher the expertise needed to apply it. This Tuesday we will explore the subject through grappling techniques initiated by the opponent. We will see a few examples from the Bujinkan syllabus of high violence techniques and then move on to medium level of violence necessitating a better technique.

The sessions will start with kamae followed by the himum. The session ends with Randori.

This Monday we are exploring the opposite direction of sequence number 4.

Instead of checking the limbs to close distance into one of the 5 basic themes, we move out side the opponent’s grip using daken and kansetsu waza and using medium level of violence.

The session will start with Ninjutsu kamae followed by the himum. We finish the session with full contact Randori.

A video summery of this session will be uploaded to Ninjutsu training in video category in the AKBAN wiki.

Weekend quote – Plutarch on Cato the elder

September 27, 2013
Yossi Sheriff

1st quote

His bodily habit, since he was addicted from the very first to labour with his own hands, a temperate mode of life, and military duties, was very serviceable, and disposed alike to vigour and health.

He tells us that he never wore clothing worth more than a hundred drachmas;
that he drank, even when he was praetor or consul, the same wine as his slaves;
that as for fish and meats, he would buy thirty asses’ worth for his dinner from the public stalls, and even this for the city’s sake, that he might not live on bread alone, but strengthen his body for military service;
that he once fell heir to an embroidered Babylonian robe, but sold it at once;
that not a single one of his cottages had plastered walls;
that he never paid more than fifteen hundred drachmas for a slave, since he did not want them to be delicately beautiful, but sturdy workers, such as grooms and herdsmen, and these he thought it his duty to sell when they got oldish, instead of feeding them when they were useless;
and that in general, he thought nothing cheap that one could do without, but that what one did not need, even if it cost but a penny, was dear;
also that he bought lands where crops were raised and cattle herded, not those where lawns were sprinkled and paths swept.

On the march, he carried his own armour on foot, while a single attendant followed in charge of his camp utensils. With this man, it is said, he was never wroth, and never scolded him when he served up a meal, nay, he actually took hold himself and assisted in most of such preparations, provided he was free from his military duties.

Water was what he drank on his campaigns, except that once in a while, in a raging thirst, he would call for vinegar, or, when his strength was failing, would add a little wine.

AKBAN academy veterans, Elad Nagar and Ra’am Manzur will lead this Sukkot holiday the advanced pragmatic base of hitting in Ninjutsu (Dakentaijutsu). In three afternoons we will improve accuracy, power and explosive speed of our punches and kicks.
For this intensive and demanding seminar practitioners need: punching gloves, protection gear and water.
The seminar is open to AKBAN Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Ramat Hasharon students only.

Weekend quote – Carl von Clausewitz

September 20, 2013
Yossi Sheriff

1st quote

War therefore is an act of violence to force our opponent to fulfill our will.

Violence arms itself with the inventions of Art and Science in order to face violence. Self-imposed restrictions, almost negligible, termed International Law, accompany it without essentially impairing its power.

Violence, that is to say physical force (for there is no moral force without the conception of states and law), is therefore the means; the compulsory submission of the enemy to our will is the ultimate object.
