It would be nice if the Aikido section where expanded to include more videos. Am I allowed to email other websites to see if we can include their videos or does the community wish to produce their own videos? I'm new, so I don't know what the protocol is. If it's already on YouTube, is it illegal to post a video here?

By the way, you guys are doing an excellent job. Despite the fact that I just started martial arts, I believe, like many of you do, that martial arts should be a way of life. There are far too many people suffering due to ignorance and lack of connection to their basic (and advanced) survival skills.

Yes, you can write freely, but please write your own content, Google justifiably punishes us for duplicate content.

Yes, you can create a video page with a youtube technique. It's easy, below the wiki search there is "create a new video article"

Yes, you can add a youtube to an existing page (its rather cumbersome, add the identifier only- eg. b6JXXId6Ynk - to these tags <youtube></youtube> and you'll get this: <youtube>b6JXXId6Ynk</youtube> paste it in the wiki page and voilà!

Yes, you can make wiki code mistakes, we will correct in few hours if any occur.

Yes, these clips can be by any martial artist in youtube.

Yes we believe, just like you, that martial arts are not only an esoteric way of life but a culture - martial arts are a culture.

Well, actually yes to all. Keep training

I think I've created a mess with my first attempt at posting a video, but we all fall down and get up right back.

When I press the edit button I'm informed that I don't have permission to fix it. Does this mean that I have to get the "technique" right the first time or will I be able to clean my own mess in the future?

P.S. In what box do I write in the source of the video, because I like to give credit to where credit is deserved.

Disclaimer: I'm new to martial arts, but I'm willing to help in the process of gathering data.

P.S.S. Happy Hanukkah

Hi Yossi,
the videos of Otake Sensei are superb! I wonder from which source they are? At the moment it does not seem to be possible to buy any DVD or VHS of Tenshin Shoden Katori Shinto Ryu. Is it possible to download them anywhere on your website?
Thanks for your answer in advance.

The TSKSR videos were edited by an Akban veteran and posted to Kultura, a shared video service that allows mutual wiki-like editing.
It is indeed a good thing to have the techniques broken down to its components.
If someone from Akban would upload the clips to youtube that would be fine, otherwise, we can barely afford the server fees for our project, and we can not host the clips on our server in a downloadable form.

Flexibility Routine?Paladin347
I'm very new to this site and I am very interested in the fitness routine developed here. Thank you for all the effort that was put into it and sharing this knowledge freely. I see that there are routines for running and strength training, and I am wondering if there is some sort of routine to increase flexibility as well (though the guys in the strength training video looked pretty flexible). Perhaps something done before or after workouts. And do you guys just jump right into the strength routine or do you have a specific warmup you use? Thank you very much for any information.

Even after 19 years in development, we are still developing aspects and honing our strength routine. Flexibility is ready for Hebrew part of our site, but it'll take us some time before we'll translate it.

That's the minus side of working with no budget, it's slow. The plus side is that the recession does not slow things.

Flexibility videos and tables will hopefully be ready in June in English, till then, we have plenty of other work trying to finish editing in video all the Ryu kata in three systems.

Thanks for the patience.

Hi Im new to this site too. I have been doing Tai Chi for about a year now. I have a 2 fold question one when would be a good time to do my Tai Chi, before the the running or strenght exercises. The other part is that is Tai Chi a good mach for the flexibility part of the program?

Timing your fitness routineYossi Sheriff
There are many variations to the time and sequence of training routines.
From fitness point of view it does not matter, as long as you are having fun.

You should ask your Sifu, maybe from the perspective of your discipline the time you do the fitness in relation to your Tai Chi is important.

Tai Chi is a great exercise, but it does not supplement flexibility.

I don't think that the timing matters. What matters is your personal preference.
What I suggested is that you'll ask your Tai chi teacher, maybe he thinks differently.

Hi. Thanks for the excellent page! Congratulations to all involved.
I am a beginner and have some doubts. Sorry if they are stupid...
1) Streght routine - I must do it every day before running or just in the days indicated in the running table?
2) Flexibility is part of the routine for you? If yes, every day?
3) How long is going to take between basic and intermediate running table? and between intermediate and advanced?
4) In the "Basic Streght Routine" there are a lot of pictures different from the workout in the basic streght table. When is it good to add these to my streght routine?
Thank you again!

Strength and fitness routines - answersYossi Sheriff
Get a thorough physical exam and an OK from a physician before starting out. Recent studies we conducted showed us that getting a heart attack while doing the routine is no fun at all

1) You can do the strength routine on any day you choose. It does not matter if it's on a running day or not.
2) The flexibility routine is basic and we still haven't translated the Hebrew tables to English. Sorry about that, so much content so little manpower...
3) You should run the tables at the rate and tempo depicted. It takes time, we know.
4) The basic strength routine pictures are the whole "Himum", meaning the flexibilty/yoga/strength we do before each training session. The strength routine is the basic necessities.

Which "X-Kan" would be the best? What's the difference?Yoshukaikarateguy
Hello!!!!!!!!!! I was wanting to ask everyone here a quick question. I was wondering out of the three "X-Kan" which one is the best? I'm wanting to start in Ninjutsu, (actually took a class last Sunday under the Genbukan). There's a Genbukan Dojo about 45 mins. from my house, another Genbuakn school 1 hr 20 mins from my house, two Bujinkan schools about 1 hr 30 mins from my house, a Bujinkan breakaway about 1 hr 30 mins forom my house, and a Jinenkan school 4 hr 45 mins from my house. Which one would be the best?????? I'd like everyone's thoughts. Also could you all let me know what's the difference between the schools? Please!!!!!!!!!

Thanks

Which x-kan is the best?Yossi Sheriff
The X-kans, the Ninjutsu schools originating in Takamatzu sensei, all rely on initially similar curriculum.

Your question is without a good answer. All practice and tutoring are individual, they all depend on the instructor, not on the system.

Our suggestion? just try each instructor and see.

Good luck!

Why did Jinenkan and Genbukan broke with BujinkanYossi Sheriff
Two different reasons.
Jinenkan and Fumio Manaka sensei just wanted time and space to develop freely. Manaka sensei gives credit to his teacher, Hatsumi sensei.

Genbukan is a different story. I don't know the details for sure, just rumors, but Tanemura sensei does not give credit to Hatsumi, his teacher. That is not good.

Why did Jinenkan and Genbukan broke with BujinkanYoshukaikarateguy
Thank you again. I did hear one thing from a Jinenkan Instructor about the Genbukan, he told me that Tanemura got into a fight with Hatsumi at his mother's funeral over how one of Tanemura's students was disciplined. Mr. Joseph said that is a "no no" in Japan. Also I think that the Genbukan "down talks" the Bujinkan a bit, just because of the direction Hatsumi took it. Mr. Joseph said that when Manaka sensei left the Bujinkan it was on good terms. He said that Manaka asked if he could leave and do his own thing, and Hatsumi said go with god. But I didn't know how much of this story was "true", that's why I asked you all on this forum. Does the AKBAN keep ties with the Bujinkan or do you all stand on your own two feet? Also if you had to pick between the Genbukan or Jinenkan which would you go with?

Hi Yossi,

I accidently stumbled across your site by accident the other day and would just like to say that I think its brilliant what you guys are doing and keep up the excellent work. You guys have high morales as you are freely sharing your knowledge and not cashing in on it. Well done. I think its fantastic.

Im looking at your ninjutsu belt requirements and I think it would be an absolute waste not to learn it. I have tried to find a place to train but the closest one is too far for me to travel. Instead I have found someone who wants to learn this with me and work out the movements from the videos and explanations on a weekly basis. Do you have any tips for me? Maybe we could, when we feel ready and knowledgable enough... pop over and get graded. Or send a video for you to look at. Or grade ourselves with strict scrutiny? Im just throwing out some ideas, lol.

I wont be jumping straight into the deep end as i have spent a few years in different martial arts from boxing, muay thai, jeet kune do, and then spent a year studying ju jitsu which looks similar in practice. I feel its time to knuckle down to study one style completley and this is the style to which i want to put all my efforts into.

Many thanks for reading this post.

Hi, thanksYossi Sheriff
This website involves a lot of work, but we are trying to make the information in it better.
Right now one of us, Keith, is trying to improve the User interface of the wiki. Hopefully we will see the results in few weeks.

I am now transferring the techniques into Hebrew, as, strangely, most of the content was written in English.

Our next project is retaking most of the techniques in HD video and adding some tutorials to contextualize the traditional techniques.

I think that training alone, without the supervision of an instructor, is pretty dangerous and might lead to injury, so we do not have an online program that cashes on our knowledge.

Please enjoy the stuff we document, again, thank you for your post.

Hey!
Grats for this nice site!

I wonder, if you could publish a dojo list for AKBAN and maybe other Martial Arts Clubs?

I´d like to know, if you train all the stiles (BJJ, Muay Thai, Judo etc) in 'one' dojo, means, if this belongs to your Ninjutsu curriculum?! Or do you train just the Bujinkan stuff and just put the other stiles on the page for common information?

Greetings

The Akban curriculumYossi Sheriff
The veterans who learned in Akban are based in Bujinkan/ Jinenkan syllabus.

We take traditional kata from this syllabus, practice these as accurately as we can and then try to see how it works in Randori, sparring.

Doing this kind of work systematically for many years (the Akban Methodical Pyramid) has forced us to be in top fitness, and to augment our practice with many training methods and techniques from other martial arts.

BJJ, Judo, Muai thai feature prominently because they contain indispensable skills for sparring.

We are slowly translating the Hebrew biographies of the instructors to English. It'll take time, sorry, too many tasks

I teach only in groups, in Israel, and in years long process.

From my experience person who is not feeling well can not commit to long term processes, only to short ones.

My advice, an advice I myself took once, is to seek some sort of emotional support.

I am not that support you need, I teach people who actually do not need me, that gives them (and me) freedom to stop training and be free.

Welcome, friends in martial arts.
This board is fairly new, I just started it today, 12th February, 2008. In the Hebrew section of our site we have a crowded forum full of our practicing members.

So we did not hurry to build another forum, but the growing number of viewers from all over the world caused us to rethink.

I guess that at the beginning it will be a strange forum. In a web site with over 10000 pages of content many will probably get in here, read my post and carry on, but some, maybe even you, will feel free to express their thoughts and questions here. Please do.

We will read this forum every day and if you post here we will try to answer to the best of our knowledge and courtesy. I will.

Dear friendYossi Sheriff
Training for many years in martial arts demands not only the dedication and will you already show, but a serious amount of real life management - Having a job, earning enough to pay for food, medical bills and rent.

So veterans in our school juggle many hats, parenthood, work, etc. and then add training in a dojo to their life, they learn to be patient and compromise.

It takes an ongoing effort.

Maybe you could use your dedication to hone these adult skills of compromise and start training nearer to the place you live.

I learned of a good Ninjutsu school that is under Jinenkan and is not affiliated with Akban.

Here is their site's address. The sensei is Mr. Mitchel, he is very accurate.

X- kan ninjutsu in the USA - the best placesYossi Sheriff
I think that the level of technical abilities is on the rise all over the world, even in Bujinkan dojos.

In the states, I don't personally know instructors in Bujinkan, but there are many good ones.

I would go and train with Mr. Mitchell, if he teaches himself:
New York, Mahopac, Jinenkan Yasuragi Dojo, Dojocho Adam Mitchell, Sandan, Yasuragi Center, 862 Route 6, Mahopac, NY 10541, Phone: (845) 628-5425

Here are some links to Jinenkan dojos
http://www.jinenkanseigi.com/links.htm

As of this time there are no certified Akban instructors in the states. It takes 12-15 years to get a blackbelt and even though more then 100 veterans are training the preparation rate of new instructors is pleasingly slow.

Good luck with your martial journey.

Hi Jarrad,Yossi Sheriff
My name is Yossi and I have been a Bujinkan practitioner till the mid 1990's. Our syllabus is mainly Bujinkan koryu, but since we spar we augmented it, and still do, according to the Methodical pyramid .

Since we always spar we need to be fit, accordingly we devised, over more then fifteen years, a very gradual fitness program. We still update it, but it takes several months for us to translate updates into English and Japanese .

We would like to see our poor techniques replaced with better ones in our Martial arts encyclopedia. Editing is open to all, but i think many are reluctant to edit this particular wiki because of the "museum effect"; they are weary of touching the exhibit...

We built this wiki to document our practice in martial arts and more - to document all martial arts in a semantic database that will allow study and comparison. Feel free to use your experience.

Thank you

True BudoRobertson.jarrad
Yossi,
I myself have been raised on full contact (randori) and to say the least have hit a small but not overcome able impasse with my training here in the states. I have enjoyed sampling many different instructors over the past couple of years only to come to the sad conclusion that save for a few higher ranking members I keep coming upon the same strict forms and movements being taught. (Reminds me of watching kids at the local YMCA! LOL!) I know the basics and can only stress their repetition but Hatsumi sensei has stressed more than one time that after a point in your training the Kihon Happo becomes your own. No two people move alike and that is why it is so important that you train with as many people as possible. After which you should sit down and discuss what you have learned about that technique and your own weaknesses. That is the key to mastering your own Taijutsu and building life long friendships in Budo. Sadly again something that is amiss here in the west (mind you not everywhere so anyone else reading please take no offence to this statement) but everyone here seems to horde their skills and try to hide weakness with a mask of ego and power over others. Budo has no name or face, Budo is nowhere and everywhere all at once. Budo is a ghost or vapor, Budo is not fixed to anyone or anything, so Yossi my friend I believe that by augmenting your training that you and your group have only helped Budo to grow. A fixed art is a dead art. I think that Hatsumi sensei has always meant for this to happen. I myself hope to not prove to myself or other how much I know or how strong I am, but just to discover what my weaknesses are and just how much more I have to learn. I have cast off my rank and claim none. It has taken me almost 30 years of my life and training to figure out just how much of a beginner I truly am.:)

What to eat when practicingYossi Sheriff
Hi,
First please let me remind that you should get checked by a medical Doctor before and during any physical practice routine.

The Akban fitness routine is posted on this site, in Hebrew, English and other languages as a reference. Individual adjustments are necessary and can be made by a certified instructor.

The question of what and when to eat if you are practicing is a big one and we are writing the Akban recommendations for it. I think it will be ready before December.

Meanwhile,
1. Try to eat natural food, try to eat less food that is processed. Our law: if the product has more then 5 ingrediends, don't eat it.
2. Eat enough protein, at least 1 gr. per Kg. body weight. If you train hard everyday you can eat more. Remember, there is protein in wheat, rice etc. so take this in acount.
3. Pay attention to your cravings. Especialy concerning vegetables and fruits. Try to eat what you want in this department.
4. Minimize sweets and sweetened drinks.
5. Don't obsess. Take it easy, just enjoy the food you're eating and don't worry too much about the rules I wrote above.

I just wanted to get some discussion going again. I am a practitioner of ninjutsu here in the United States and your videos are very helpful in my training. Thank you for the wiki and keep up the good work.

Hi Sean, you are most welcomeYossi Sheriff
As the magnitude of the "documenting martial arts" project was so complex we settled for many substandard techniques and videos.

I think that we can now slowly remedy these techniques and in the next months we will replace almost of them and upload all the kata practiced in Bujinkan and Jinenkan.

Writing up in three languages has complicated things even further, so we do not update our Japanese section all the time. Even the English section gets left out for these reasons. Most of our veterans write in a well trafficked Hebrew forum and we even started to write up wiki articles in Hebrew too.

We are slowly writing things in English to substantiate the videoed material.

I think we are lucky that our site is a Google secret, no one knows about us and that leaves us a space to think things over and write an outrageous wiki articles about Ninjutsu etc.

Keep training,

Hi,

I think what you are doing with the akban wiki is remarkable... I have extensive knowledge of mediawiki/semanticmediawiki and programming for it and want to help out.

For starters I think you could use SemanticForms to help create a better schema for your articles (semanticforms enables you to create "forms" that create wiki articles once they are filled out and saved..) - but I am willing to help in anything you need...

Semantic formsYossi Sheriff
Hi Ben,
First let me apologize for not answering promptly, as the English forum generates so little response I neglected to look at it...

About the semantic forms, that is interesting, could you please mail of post some links and documentation of this?

We can differentiate the "martial arts and fitness wiki" effort into two parts: the technology/user interface and the content. You are most welcomed to help in both, you can further mail me at yossi at akban. org

wiki edit problemRavain
I ain't able to edit any wiki pages with tags like these:
"is part of Budo Ninjutsu Grade requirements syllabus::Yellow belt | Yellow belt grade requirements"
, if i remove the tag all works fine.
I tried with 3 different browser but all it does is just saying "waiting for www.akban.org" when i klick save or preview.
Anybody else got that problem or knows how to solve it?

Fitness tablesChunk
Hi everyone, I´m a new user but would like to thank you all for the great work you´ve put into this site. It shows some good research and dedication.

As a quick observation that may help users in the future I think many of the fitness tables should have a .PDF link or printable version.

Some of the tables get cut off on my browser by the google ads, and also it's more comfortable to have the table on paper so you can attach it to your calendar. Helps remind you to train!

Ok, thanks again for the great work and I look forward to all the new updates.

Hi there, thanks for writing. We were so lonelyYossi Sheriff

We are having huge traffic of visitors, but you're almost the first to comment on something we are working on.

The fitness tables in the English section of the Akban web site are part of our project. It took more then fifteen years to collect the data to assemble them and we are currently doing just what you suggested.

Since the effort goes to the martial arts encyclopedia and the fact that this site is multilingual, we guess that the PDF will be ready in two months.

It takes so long because we newly integrated all the data of the last three years and added tables for older people (some of us are slowly aging ) and also correct images for weight training, marathon and ultra marathon tables.

You'll be able to see the PDF and the updates in the middle of May.

Take care and please train only after you get checked by a sport M.D.
